Ways to Gain Experience in the Technology Field

Written by Heidi Song September 21th 2021

With a growing dependence on technology in numerous fields, it is clear that there is a high demand for individuals who have technology-related experience and knowledge. For many students, this growth has made the field more appealing to get into, but since most tech jobs require at least a bachelor’s degree, how can students who have an interest in the technology field gain experience even before heading to college and getting a degree?

To start, as the number of virtual opportunities for youth continues to increase on a daily basis, one easily accessible and valuable way to be immersed in this field early on is by attending virtual events. A great way to find virtual tech events is by keeping up to date with non-profit organizations, such as here at Youth Insights. Organizations like Youth Insights are very resourceful for finding virtual opportunities as they allow students to access useful resources that can help with exploring specific career pathways including technology. One type of virtual event that can help youth learn more about the tech field, in particular, is by attending events that feature guest speakers who are capable of sharing their learning experiences as professionals in the field. This will not only allow students to learn more about specific jobs but also a chance to connect with them, which can potentially lead to more opportunities.

Another great way to gain experience in the technology field as a student is by finding opportunities within tech companies. Oftentimes, prestigious tech companies, including Apple, Microsoft, and Google to name a few hold events, programs, and other opportunities designated towards high school students specifically. Not only is this a great way to meet like-minded individuals and connect with experienced workers in the field, but it also allows students to get a feel for what it’s like to work in this industry.

Furthermore, various universities provide tech-related opportunities for students, which allows them to engage in learning materials that can be applied to jobs in the technology field. For instance, schools like Columbia University allows students to enhance their knowledge in computer science as well as in other subjects which can be beneficial for developing skills that are necessary for specific tech jobs, like analytical skills and problem-solving. At the end of the day, these valuable opportunities can be a great enrichment experience for both the students who are interested in pursuing a career in technology as well as those who are not.
